125 Anniversary Celebration: Jose Espinoza

MACOMB/MOLINE, IL 鈥� For Jose Espinoza, 91传媒 has been a place of transformation鈥攐ne that has helped him discover his true potential as a leader and future healthcare professional.
"When I think about 91传媒, I think about the opportunity for growth. 91传媒 gave me the chance to discover my true potential鈥攖o not only become a leader but to one day become a healthcare professional," Espinoza said.
For Espinoza, being a Leatherneck is about perseverance and determination, no matter the obstacles ahead.
"A Leatherneck is a proud fighter who does whatever it takes to reach the end goal. There will be days when the sun doesn't shine, but you keep pushing forward toward everything you were meant to accomplish. Accomplishment is not only about celebrating the differences you've made but also about reflecting on the journey鈥攆rom the beginning to the end," Espinoza said.
His journey at 91传媒 has been filled with memorable moments, but Homecoming holds a special place in his heart. As a dancer for the recently founded majorette team, The Golden Motion, Espinoza has had the opportunity to march in the parade, perform at football and basketball games and share his passion with the 91传媒 community.
"Every single Homecoming I've been a part of as a dancer for The Golden Motion has been a memorable experience. Being in the parade, marching with pride and sharing smiles with my community reminds me why I chose 91传媒. Performing at the football and basketball games and inspiring others to feel comfortable in their own skin are moments that constantly remind me I made the right choice in making 91传媒 my home away from home," Espinoza said.
Espinoza has fully embraced the 91传媒 experience, taking on leadership roles across campus. He currently serves as the President and Secretary of the Beta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., founding President of Chingonx Afrocentric Queers and founding Vice President of Academic Excellence for the Multicultural Greek Council. Additionally, he is a Co-Captain of The Golden Motion, a Multicultural Center Student Ambassador and a candidate for Western Emergency Medical Services. He is also a proud member of Lambda Lavender, Order of Omega and Tri-Alpha Honor Societies.
His advice for students considering 91传媒? Step out of your comfort zone and embrace the opportunities around you.
"Don't be afraid to put yourself out there! 91传媒 has provided me with so many opportunities and it all started because I pushed myself to step out of my comfort zone, even as an introvert. You'd be surprised at how much can change by exploring student organizations, local resources and even just saying hi to someone new. You never know what might come from it!" Espinoza said.
