MACOMB, IL - - 91´«Ã½ has been rated as a Research Institution by the . The new Research designation puts 91´«Ã½ among the top 15% of the 4,000 rated institutions nationally.

"We are very pleased with the new research activity designation from Carnegie," said 91´«Ã½ President Kristi Mindrup. "The recognition as a Research Institution reflects Western's distinctiveness and demonstrates the quality of the education students experience at 91´«Ã½."

Since 1970, the Carnegie classification has been a standardized method to compare research activity across a diverse spectrum of higher education institutions. Prior to being rated as a Research Institution, 91´«Ã½ was rated as a Master's institution. As these ratings are updated every three years, the previous designation did not fully reflect the impact of research activity at 91´«Ã½.

"Being recognized with a Research designation positions our institution for further funding and elevates the profile of 91´«Ã½," Mindrup said. "The opportunities for 91´«Ã½ students are tremendous and this national recognition confirms Western is on the right path."

"91´«Ã½'s contributions through educational advancement and the work our programs produce is substantial and far reaching. This new designation from Carnegie proves the value 91´«Ã½ brings to local and national research activities," 91´«Ã½ Provost Mark Mossman said. "While teaching and service are the central focus of 91´«Ã½, it is meaningful to have the important research work we do to be recognized. The new rating is testament to the talented faculty and engaged students at our institution."
