Ex-officio: Madgelyn Helwig, Neil Baird Summary The 2014-2015 WID Committee was responsible for deciding how to implement a number of changes at the levels of both guiding philosophy and operating policy that were initiated the year before. This included substantial changes to the WID form that were approved by Faculty Senate in the spring of 2014. The committee met 13 times (7 in the fall, 6 in the spring) over the course of the year. As part of its regular duties, the committee approved 3 courses for WID designation and conducted 7 CITR workshops. The committee also formulated an overenrollment policy and made substantial headway in developing an electronic database to showcase exemplary student writing. In the spring semester, the committee began our review of existing WID courses under the new guidelines and concluded two reviews prior to the end of the semester. Activities A. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all new WID courses. B. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all significant changes in the WID requirements for individual majors. The committee reviewed and approved three courses for WID designation in the 2014-2015 academic year. Foreign Languages 350 Introduction to Contemporary Critical Theory was approved on September 22, 2014 (this course was later retracted by the department to pursue designation as a General Education course). Communication 247 Argumentation was approved on February 23, 2015. Communication 457 Social Influence was approved on May 4, 2015. C. To conduct periodic reviews of all WID courses to assure compliance with the principles and practices of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines graduation requirement. Given the significant changes to the WID guidelines that were approved in the Spring of 2014 (changes themselves reflective of a shift in the philosophy of WID), the decision was made to spend the fall semester providing opportunities for departments to become aware of, and seek further information about, those changes. In the spring, as a way of testing the review process under the new guidelines, the committee asked for departments to volunteer their WID courses for review. CHEM401 was reviewed on April 6, 2015. PSY323 was reviewed on April 20, 2015. Two other departments expressed interest in submitting their courses for review and they will be given that opportunity in the fall of 2015, as the committee devises a long range plan for review. D. To maintain a list of all current instructors of WID courses. A list of all WID courses in the catalog was compiled in the fall of 2014. This list was updated in the spring. Also, a list of current WID courses and instructors was compiled in the fall of 2014. E. To monitor course enrollment in WID courses. In the Fall 2014 semester, there were two courses that were overenrolled: LEJA440, and MUS390. The committee chair contacted the chairs of those departments. In the Spring 2015 semester, there were three courses that were overenrolled: AGRI340, COMM413. Two additional courses were listed as overenrolled but subsequent follow-ups with those department chairs revealed that those courses were no longer had the WID designation. The committee took steps to remove those courses from the list of WID classes. The WID Committee adopted a new procedure for overenrollment in December 2014. The new procedure stipulates that overenrollment data will be sought prior to the start of the new semester and re-examined following 10-day enrollments. This will provide additional opportunities for the committee to contact department chairs and see if any compensation is being offered to those instructors. Additionally, at the first October and March meetings of the Faculty Senate, the committee chair will submit an overenrollment report. F. To secure periodic feedback from students, faculty, alumni, and employers concerning implementation and effects of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines graduation requirement. The committee has sought feedback from a variety of sources as it has implemented its new procedures and policies. Feedback on filling out the new form was sought from Dr. Schmidt when he met with the committee to discuss the FL350 class. CITR sessions held in Fall 2014 provided an opportunity to obtain feedback on the shift in WID philosophy as well as the new forms. That feedback led to the committee making a concerted effort to provide a venue for exemplary student writing to serve as examples and models for interested WID instructors; a list of the various ways departments could meet WID requirements was separated from the general guidelines and posted as a separate link on the committee website; and the committee continued to discuss refinements to the WID forms. G. To sponsor one or more faculty development activities each year to improve Writing Instruction in the Disciplines courses. The committee conducted three CITR sessions during the Fall 2014 semester. These sessions were intended to introduce the new WID guidelines to interested faculty, department chairs, and administration. Two sessions were held on the Macomb campus, and one session was held on the Quad Cities campus. Four CITR workshops were conducted in the Spring 2015 semester. These sessions on the Macomb campus included two workshops specifically intended to assist instructors on enhancing their WID courses. H. To perform such other duties as designated by the Faculty Senate. The committee returned to an initiative begun by Dr. Rabchuk several years ago for a WID Journal. The committee felt that taking up this proposal would address feedback of several instructors for a location to see WID assignments and examples of exemplary student writing. It was decided to create an online forum entitled the WID Anthology. Submission guidelines and a release form were drafted; these will be finalized in the Fall 2015 semester and then distributed to faculty, department chairs, and administration.
