To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all new WID courses. The committees primary duty is to recommend the approval and disapproval of all new WID and BOT/BA writing courses. The committee considered the following new WID and or BOT/BA courses and, after appropriate modifications, recommended them all to the Senate for approval: History 420, History 491, Chemistry 422, CS 320 (BOT/BA), RPTA 322, BC 325, Engineering 490, History 422 (BOT/BA) and English 380 (BOT/BA). To facilitate the submission of online courses to be considered BOT/BA writing courses, the WID webpage was updated and a series of parallel forms were developed and posted for this application process. b. To recommend to the Faculty Senate the approval and disapproval of all significant changes in the WID requirements of individual majors. In addition to new WID courses, the committee is charged with reviewing any proposed modifications to the WID requirements of all majors at 91ý. The committee reviewed and recommended approval to the Senate for changes to the following programs and majors: History (Teaching and Non-teaching options), Broadcasting, Engineering and Chemistry (Biochemistry option). RPTA will submit a change in its WID requirement in the Fall of 2010. In addition, the committee recommended approval for identifying English 381 as the WID course for Interdisciplinary Studies program majors with concentrations in Renewable Energy and Wind and Renewable Energy and Biofuels, and IS 320 as the WID course for IS majors with a Renewable Energy Policy concentration. c. To conduct periodic reviews of all WID courses to assure compliance with the principles and practices of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines Graduation Requirement. & f. To secure periodic feedback from students, faculty, alumni, and employers concerning the implementation and effects of the Writing Instruction in the Discipline graduation requirement. This years WID committee undertook the task of surveying all 2009-2010 WID instructors and all departments offering WID courses. The survey was developed with input from all WID committee members, and was implemented with help from Tere North at the Survey Center. The survey of the instructors focused on their understanding and implementation of all aspects of a WID-approved course, as defined in the WID new course application form, and also on their awareness of other services provided by the WID committee. The survey of the department chairs was intended as a census of all the current WID offerings, and also a request for any feedback on the part of students and alumni regarding the WID requirement. The survey to faculty was sent out to all 127 faculty identified by the UCSS as having taught a WID or BOT/BA course in the 2009-2010 academic year. Of those who received the survey, 104 responded. The respondents represented all but five departments that offered WID courses, and all but six WID courses were represented. The survey results are provided in an appendix to this report, and will be used as a basis for identifying instructor and programmatic needs in the implementation of the WID graduation requirement. The survey sent out to department chairs was returned by 16 departments, 15 of which offer WID courses. The chairs sent current syllabi for the WID courses, and identified those instructors who taught them. Several department chairs sent copies of emails of feedback from students and alumni who took WID courses. The survey letter also served another purpose by spurring on several departments to submit requests for new WID and BOT/BA writing courses this past year, and several others to write the WID committee chair for clarification on submission procedures. The committee also discussed plans for surveying students who are taking WID courses, and developing a short survey for employers to be administered through the Career Services office. d. To maintain a list of all current instructors of WID courses. & e. To monitor course enrollment in WID courses. The committee used data from UCSS and the department chairs to update the list of current WID instructors, WID courses being offered, and to monitor enrollment data in WID courses. The following courses were found to be overenrolled (having enrollment at or above 28 students per instructor) in the 2009-2010 academic year: Spring 2010 FCS 490 with 28 2 sections of RPTA 376 with 29 and 30 enrolled, respectively RDG 384 with 28 MUS 391 with 28 Fall 2009 FCS 490 with 38 RPTA 376 with 29 Both the RDG 384 and FCS 490 courses were overenrolled in the previous year, as well. g. To sponsor one or more faculty development activity each year to improve Writing Instruction in the Disciplines courses. Neil Baird and Bonnie Sonnek wrote and produced a podcast for publication on the WID website with the title: WID Fundamentals: How to Design a WID Assignment. A WID assignment worksheet was also published, and faculty who listened to the podcast were encouraged to submit a sample assignment to Neil Baird for review and feedback.
