Borgia, Jane Brown, Kevin Hall (fall CBT rep), Steve Hunt, Cecil Tarrant (spring CBT rep), Lora E. Wallace, Anita Werling Ex-officio: Alice Robertson, Neil Baird Committee Activities, 2008-2009 At a series of eight meetings during the academic year (one per month save January), the WID Committee completed a variety of tasks, many of which were in keeping with new duties and responsibilities given to the Committee by the Faculty Senate and a new direction for the Committee concerning faculty development and awareness of WIDs place in the educational mission of 91ý. The major task facing the Committee in 2008-2009 was the WID BOT-BA review, generated by a request of Faculty Senate at its 15 April 2008 meeting in response to the Request for Change in Major proposal filed for the Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts Degree Program. Because BOT-BA students do not have a major, their ability to meet the Undergraduate Catalogs Writing Requirement (Successfully complete the WID requirement, found on p. 117) is limited; the WID requirement was designed to be discipline/major-specific. Rather than work from an outdated list of Approved BOT-BA Advanced Writing Experience Courses provided with the original proposal, the members of the WID Committee, in consultation with the BOT-BA Advisory Board, created instead a new option to ensure BOT-BA graduates, like all other 91ý graduates, received writing instruction prior to the completion of their degree: BOT-BA Writing courses. The BOT-BA Writing Guidelines (accepted by the Faculty Senate as a WID Committee report on 28 October 2008) reflect slight modifications of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines Approved Guidelines; language concerning discipline-specific elements in the WID guidelines was removed, and language acknowledging instructional techniques unique to courses whose primary delivery method often involves a distance-learning platform was added. During spring 2009 members of the WID Committee, including Jennifer McNabb, Neil Baird, Kathy Barclay, Jane Brown, Lora Wallace, and Anita Werling, reviewed eight online courses for BOT-BA Writing designation: BC 323, Broadcasting and Society; BC 328, Mass Media and Minorities; LEJA 484, Fire Prevention Organization and Management; LEJA 485, Political and Legal Foundations for Fire Protection; PHIL 330, Moral Philosophy; SOC 300, Minority Peoples; SOC 360, Gender and Society; and UNIV 490, Career Internship. These courses were identified by the course instructors, department chairs, and BOT-BA advisors as suitable for potential inclusion in the new BOT-BA Writing course list in terms of content and delivery method. Reviewers evaluated syllabi and additional course materials utilizing BOT-BA Evaluation and Final Report Forms, which were accepted by the Faculty Senate as a WID Committee report on 28 October 2008. These forms were used to summarize the findings of the reviewers as well as the discussions with course faculty and department chairs during review meetings. The WID Committee recommended that all eight courses be designated as BOT-BA Writing courses. In consultation with the BOT-BA Advisory Board, WID Chair Jennifer McNabb recommended that the BOT-BA Request for Change in Major form be amended to include as the programs Writing Requirement the following: Successfully complete a WID course or a BOT-BA Writing course. The BOT-BA Writing review, including the course recommendations, was accepted as a WID Committee report by the Faculty Senate on 28 April 2009, and the BOT-BA Request for Change in Major form was approved at the same meeting. The WID Committee also created a Policies and Procedures document. The Committee was one of the few Faculty Senate committees and councils without an official statement of Policies and Procedures, and the approval of that document in March 2009 brings the WID Committee into compliance with the Faculty Senates request for Policies and Procedures for all standing councils and committees. Due to the relatively low turnout at recent WID faculty development workshops, the members of the Committee decided to create a podcast instead, in the hopes of reaching more faculty members, especially those who are new to Western and new to WID courses. The script for the podcast, entitled How to Build a WID Syllabus, was developed in fall 2008 by a subcommittee of Laurel Borgia, Neil Baird, and Jennifer McNabb and recorded in March 2009 with the assistance of Lisa Barr in English and Journalism. The podcast project included: A review of the Writing Instruction in the Disciplines Approved Guidelines with an emphasis on how they can be addressed in the construction of course syllabi References to specific resources available to WID instructors, particularly at the WID website: HYPERLINK "http://www.wiu.edu/WID" http://www.wiu.edu/WID A posting of syllabi from all members of the committee (with representation from each College), demonstrating the application of the eight Writing Instruction in the Disciplines Approved Guidelines for podcast listeners The creation of a WID iTunesU account to store the podcast University Writing Center Director Neil Baird also volunteered to post information about WID Guidelines and Resources on the newly-redesigned University Writing Center trifold, to be used at the annual New Faculty Orientation Table Fair. Members of the Committee also conducted a departmental WID review for IS 320 (Business Communications) in the Business Core. This course serves as the WID requirement for five departments: Telecommunications Management, Economics, Information Systems and Decision Sciences, Management, and Marketing and Finance. Neil Baird and Jennifer McNabb completed a review meeting with the IS 320 faculty on the Macomb campus; Steve Hunt completed a review meeting with the IS 320 faculty on the QC campus. The members of the review committee commend the instructors of IS 320 for their innovative teaching methods in pursuit of meeting WID standards effectively. The Committee reviewed and approved WID proposals for the following: Geology/Earth and Space Sciences Teacher Certification Option. There were no individual WID course proposals submitted this academic year, although the chair consulted with faculty and chairs in multiple programs about making alterations to WID requirements. As chair of WID, Jennifer McNabb managed the WID webpage, updated the list of approved WID courses, which includes the date of the last departmental review, and updated a master list of all Western WID faculty. WID Over-enrollment, 2008 In Spring 2008, Fall 2008, and Spring 2009, the following departments had overenrolled sections: Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality (FCS 490, two overenrolled sections) Agriculture (AGRI 340, two overenrolled sections) Womens Studies (WS 455, one overenrolled section) Curriculum and Instruction (RDG 383, one overenrolled section and RDG 384, one overenrolled section) Foreign Languages and Literature (SPAN 326, one overenrolled section) All other departments and programs had no overenrolled sections during the semesters in question.
