Azalea Phinata, M.S. is an Instructor of Sports Broadcasting and Journalism at 91´«Ã½ and a Fulbright Scholar. Since completing her undergraduate studies, she has intentionally developed a career that integrates academic inquiry with professional sports media practice, grounding her teaching and research in both theory and applied production.
Phinata’s research and creative scholarship examine media representation, gender and sport, and global sports communication. Her work has been presented at national and international conferences, including NASSS, AAS, and AIFIS-MSU, with projects addressing the framing of female athletes, sexual objectification in sports broadcasting, and the cultural politics of sport in transnational contexts. Her scholarship reflects a commitment to critical media analysis while remaining closely connected to contemporary media practice.
At 91´«Ã½, Phinata teaches sports broadcasting and production, emphasizing live event coverage, commentary, scripting, and multiplatform storytelling. She integrates research-informed pedagogy with experiential learning, preparing students to critically engage with media institutions while developing professional competencies for broadcast and digital environments. During her appointment, she supervises student productions for ESPN+ broadcasts and incorporates industry standards into curriculum design.
Alongside her academic work, Phinata has produced sports journalism and documentary-style content for major media organizations including CNN Indonesia and SEA Today, as well as branded sports storytelling for companies, such as PUMA and New Balance in Indonesia. She previously served as Editor-in-Chief of RUNHOOD, one of Indonesia’s leading running and sports culture platforms, where she led editorial strategy and audience development. Her experience across journalism, branded media, and digital platforms informs her teaching on ethics, audience engagement, and the evolving relationship between sport, culture, and media.
